Roman-era figurine of griffin unearthed in Emirate of Sharjah

The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) has announced the discovery of a bronze statuette of a griffin – a mythical creature with eagle wings, a lion’s head, and a huge bird’s foot with claws – in the Mleiha area, in the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah.

Dr. Sabah Aboud Jassim, Director General of the SAA, explained that “the artefact is part of a censer bearing three statues of similar shape and distributed in a symmetrical circular shape, topped by a large and luxurious bowl used for burning incense.”

He added that it likely dates to the first century AD and is testimony to the existence of a trading network between Mleiha and nearby Roman provinces.
