Ahmed Al-Rawi, head of the archaeological administration at the airport, said that the coins were in the possession of an Egyptian passenger heading to London and a Lebanese citizen heading to Beirut.

Preliminary investigations show the coins to be under the jurisdiction of the monuments protection law, which prohibits the export of cultural property.

The coins date back to the Mohamed Ali, Egyptian Sultanate and Abbasid eras.

Al-Rawi confirmed that all coins were returned to the custody of the Ministry of Antiquities, so that the necessary measures be taken and the coins may be placed on display in specialised museums.
